2/5 (Tuesdays & Thursdays) EMT Basic Course, 9:00am – 2:30pm – Atlantic Health
This course is designed to instruct a student to the level of EMT-Basic, who serves as a vital link in the chain of the health care team. It is recognized that the majority of pre-hospital emergency medical care will be provided by the EMT-Basic. This course includes all skills necessary for the individual to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with an ambulance service or other specialized service. One day of CPR has been incorporated into each EMT-Basic class for students that are unable to get CPR prior to the start of class. There will be an additional charge of $40.00 for the CPR for all attendees (including volunteers). This is a rigorous program of classroom instruction, practical skills, evaluations, and homework assignments. The student must also complete 10 hours of clinical skills in a hospital emergency room. In order to successfully complete this course and in order to take the NJ State Certifying Examination, the student must obtain a grade of 70% on all tests. All absences must be made-up prior to taking the state exam.

3/4 (Tuesday) Medicines Do Tell – Patient History from Medications, 7:30pm – 10:30pm, 3 CEU’s – Atlantic Health
Our patients are generally on numerous medications. Many of these same patients are poor historians and will tell you that they have no medical history (or that they cannot remember their medical history). This course is designed to assist you, the provider, in identifying the potential medical history from the types of medications the patient is taking.

Autoimmune disease, stress problem, or just a respiratory problem? We take a close look at why asthma happens, and how it kills.

5/17-18 (Saturday, Sunday) Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support – PHTLS, 8am – 4pm, 16 CEU’s – Atlantic Health
The Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) course is a continuing education program created in recognition of the need in EMS for additional training in the handling of trauma patients. This program is designed to enhance and increase knowledge and skill in delivering critical care to trauma patients in the pre-hospital environment. Students will learn how to identify mechanism of injury, recognize life-threatening injuries, assess and manage trauma patients, and perform appropriate interventions prior to transporting the patient. This course includes both lecture and skill station based training.

An overview of practical techniques for applying incident management to the large Mass casualty incident.

6/17-18 (Tuesday, Wednesday) Zip It! – Communications for EMS Providers, 7:30pm – 10:30pm, 6 CEU’s – Atlantic Health
This course is designed to educate the EMS provider on the proper use of radio equipment as well as appropriate techniques for inter-personal communication.

July 2008

7/11 - 13 (Friday 7pm – 11pm, Saturday 8am – 4pm, Sunday 8am – 4pm) Paramedic Assistant, 20 CEU’s – Atlantic Health
OK, the medics are on scene. Too many EMT’s step back and become lifters and chauffeurs. This course integrates BLS more vigorously into the care team. Learn how BLS can assist with IV’s, Intubation and Ventilation, CPAP, Nebulizers, and other procedures.

7/21 (Monday) Drunk, Stroke, Crazy? – Diabetic Emergencies, 7:30pm – 10:30pm, 3 CEU’s – Atlantic Health
Learn to recognize the many presentations of this complex disease. Determine when you can and when you cannot let the patient RMA.

7/29-31< (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) Incident Command System 200 – ICS 200, 7pm -11pm, 12 CEU’s – Over the Edge
This series of classes gives us the management concepts to allow us to plan for even the largest incidents.

August 2008

8/2 (Saturday) And the Heavens Open – Can we do it? – MCI Table Top, 7pm -11pm, ???CEU’s – Over the Edge
Mass Casualty meets Matchbox. A fun way to practice the essentials of MCI management, and an introduction to a new way to drill.

8/12 (Tuesday) Go Team, Go – Sports Emergencies, 7:30pm – 10:30pm, 3 CEU’s – Atlantic Health
In this new age of sports, participants are more protected from injury than they have been in years. This level of protection, though, brings many new challenges for the EMS provider. The injuries and the challenges in providing care will be discussed in detail.

8/14 (Thursday) In the Tub, Down the Drain – Spinal Injuries, 7:30pm -10:30pm, 3 CEU’s – Atlantic Health
Dig deeper into the anatomy of the spine and the various forms of immobilization. Learn better ways to immobilize your patient quickly and easily, no matter their initial position. For seated patients, learn the techniques appropriate to a car instead of a folding chair.

Eight- hour pre-hospital pediatric emergency care. This course goes into depth on assessment and treatment appropriate to the developmental stage of the child. There is a textbook, lectures, practical scenarios and group discussions.

Currently the standard in triage care, START is a highly efficient tool for initial Triage on the MCI scene. There is a potential for over triage and under triage. Even so, properly used, START enables effective triage in 30 seconds or less.
