In an Emergency

The bulk of our income comes from our Annual Fund Drive. Other sources of revenue include:
  • Memorial donations (often made in lieu of sending flowers)
  • Bequests from wills & estates
  • Miscellaneous donations (often from patients or their families)
  • Grants from foundations and local service organizations such as the Jaycees, Junior Fortnightly and Junior League.
  • Investment interest from some stock that was donated several years ago

Our Annual Fund Drive is mailed to each Summit residence and business in September. Like all of our services, the Fund Drive is administered by volunteers. Unlike some organizations, we do not use any outside marketing agencies or professional fund raisers. As a result, we can assure our contributors that 100% of all donations made will directly benefit the First Aid Squad and the people it serves.

The annual Fund Drive typically covers only about 80% of our operating budget. The remaining 20% must be met from donations, memorials, grants and interest on a few investments. Our annual operating budget reflects the cost to provide our service from day-to-day. It does not cover capital expenses such as major building repairs or new ambulances.

We own 3 ambulances and try to keep each for 9-10 years. To accomplish this, an ambulance must be replaced or refurbished every 3-4 years. The cost of our new 1999 ambulance was $106,000. During the Fall of 2002, we upgraded the oldest of our 3 ambulances. The existing ambulance body was refurbished and re-mounted onto a new truck chassis. Although this is a significant savings over purchasing a complete new vehicle, the cost was $ 77,000. In 2005, we will replace an ambulance that has previously been refurbished.

It is estimated that a full-time paid ambulance service for the City of Summit would cost in excess of $900,000 per year.

Ambulance Replacement Fund
To help our efforts to replace the oldest of our 3 ambulances, we have launched a special capital campaign. We expect to place our next new ambulance in service in January 2006.
